Leafs Sign David Clarkson

David Nonis, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the hockey club has signed unrestricted free agent right winger David Clarkson to a seven-year contract. As per club policy, financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Clarkson, 29, played 48 games for the New Jersey Devils last season, leading the team in goals (15), power-play goals (6), game-winning goals (tie-5), penalty minutes (78) and shots (180), while registering nine assists and 24 points. In 2011-12, he set career highs in goals (30), points (46), power-play goals (8) and game-winning goals (7) in 80 games with the Devils. Clarkson also collected three goals and nine assists for 12 points with 32 penalty minutes in 24 playoff games, helping New Jersey reach the 2012 Stanley Cup Final.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Clarkson has played 426 career NHL games from 2006-07 to 2012-13, all with New Jersey, registering 97 goals, 73 assists and 170 points with 770 penalty minutes. He has also recorded 14 points (five goals, nine assists) and 32 penalty minutes in 44 career NHL playoff games. The 6-1, 200-pound undrafted forward was originally signed as a free agent by New Jersey on August 12, 2005.
