Fraser Signs One-Year Deal

David Nonis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday the hockey club has agreed to terms with defenceman Mark Fraser on a one-year contract.

Fraser, 26, played 45 games for the Maple Leafs in 2012-13, collecting eight assists and 85 penalty minutes. The 6-4, 220-pound defenceman ranked first among all NHL defencemen in penalty minutes, second in hits (153) and third (tie) in plus/minus (+18). He also led the Leafs in plus/minus and blocked shots (102). The Ottawa native saw action in four playoff games for the Leafs, registering one assist and seven penalty minutes. He also played 30 games for the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and earned five points (2 goals, 3 assists) with a team leading 114 penalty minutes. The Leafs originally acquired Fraser from the Anaheim Ducks on February 27, 2012 in exchange for Dale Mitchell.

Fraser has played 143 career NHL games with Toronto and New Jersey, posting three goals, 13 assists, 171 minutes in penalties and a plus-20 rating. He was originally New Jersey’s third choice, selected 84th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft.
