Community MVP

The Toronto Maple Leafs have teamed up with Citizen to recognize one player each month this season for his outstanding work in the community and commitment to being a positive representation of the team off the ice.

Monthly winners are presented with their award during a Leafs home game.

2012-2013

MARCH 2013

Since Cody’s arrival in Toronto, he has always been dedicated to work in the community. This past March, Cody purchased a 24 person suite through his Franson’s Friends ticket program and donated it to kids from Childhood Cancer Canada. Cody also participated in numerous community events such as the Leafs Full team visit to SickKids, the MLSE Foundation Player’s Gala, Leafs Canadian Forces Night and the Purolator Community skate.

FEBRUARY 2013

This season, Joffrey continued a long-standing Leafs tradition in supporting the Canadian Forces.  Joffrey started “Lupes Troops”, a ticket program that honours a member of the Canadian Forces at every Leafs home game.  Joffrey also attended multiple community events including the Toronto Maple Leafs Skate for Easter Seals and Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation’s “Cops, Kids and Computers” Mixer.

JANUARY 2013

The January 2013 Citizen Leafs Community MVP is captain Dion Phaneuf

Now in its third season, "Phaneuf's Friends In the Captain's Corner" is a ticket program Dion started prior to the 2010-2011 season. Since then, Dion has donated $250,000 so that every Leafs home game, patients from SickKids Hospital can come enjoy their favorite team play in their own fully customized suite – the Captain's Corner. The kids are decked out in Leafs t-shirts and hats, food is provided and the guests are featured in-game on the videoboard. This year, Dion eclipses the 1000th patient from SicKids who's seen a Leafs game due to his generosity.

2011-2012

MARCH 2012

LUKE SCHENN

The March Citizen Leafs Community MVP is Luke Schenn. For the fourth consecutive season, Luke purchased a pair of seats to continue the "Luke's Troops" program. Over the past four seasons through this program, Luke and the Leafs have had the honour and privilege of hosting almost 200 Canadian Forces soldiers at our games. This past summer, to thank Luke, the Canadian Forces invited him to Afghanistan and he was honored to attend. Luke spent a week learning the ins and outs of the Canadian Forces efforts in Afghanistan and came away more thankful than ever.

Also, this past Sunday, Luke participated in the Player's Gala benefitting the MLSE Team Up Foundation. The event raised over 330 thousand dollars towards giving kids a place to play in the City of Toronto.

Luke is also an ambassador for Easter Seals which provides programs and services to children and youth with physical disabilities across Ontario.

FEBRUARY 2012

MATT LOMBARDI

The February Citizen Toronto Maple Leafs MVP is Matthew Lombardi. Matthew has been an advocate of community leadership since his arrival in Toronto this past off-season. His work has included purchasing a 42 person gondola for a Leafs game for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario. Matthew is also a keen supporter of the Toronto Police, as just last week, he attended an event for Merry Go Round Children's Charity- a police mentorship organization that focuses on providing access to computers for disadvantaged youth.

JANUARY 2012

TIM CONNOLLY

The Citizen Maple Leafs Community MVP for January 2012 is Tim Connolly. Since Tim arrived in Toronto this past season, he has been a great ambassador for community leadership in Toronto.  At the beginning of the season, Tim started Connolly’s Crew, a ticket program where over 250 kids from Childhood Cancer Canada could take in a Leafs game from a suite on 10 different nights this season.

Also in January, Tim spent an evening at SportChek Leafs Hockey Development Clinic teaching 7-12 year olds the ins and outs of the game.  After going through fundamentals such as on-ice training instruction and how to be an impactful player at both ends of the ice, Tim preached leadership, hard work and dedication to the kids.  Tim’s love and passion of the game of hockey was evident the entire time he was on the ice and it set a great example for all in attendance.

DECEMBER 2011

DION PHANEUF

The Citizen Maple Leafs Community MVP for December 2011 is Dion Phaneuf. Your Captain is a true ambassador for community leadership in Toronto. For the second year in a row, in partnership with Sick Kids Hospital, Dion has purchased a full suite for his "Phaneuf's Friends In The Captain's Corner" program. Over the season, this initiative, which Dion has committed over $100 thousand dollars to, will allow over 800 kids from Sick Kids Hospital to take in a real live game for every single Leafs and Raptors Home Game.

Also in December, along with his teammates and a little help from Justin Bieber, Dion spearheaded a dream come true day for Jake Schaefer, a youngster who is fighting neuroblastoma. Jake was surprised by Dion, some other Leafs and the Biebs for a skate at ACC. Jake was also treated to a dressing room tour, autographs and more.

Here to present Dion with his award is Director of Community & Sports Partnerships, David DeFreitas and Toronto Maple Leafs Community Ambassador, Wendel Clark.
