Toronto Maple Leafs Community Highlights

Operation HOHOHO

On December 14, 2011, John-Michael Liles, Jake Gardiner, Luke Schenn and Tom Anselmi participated in Operation HOHOHO, an initiative the Canadian Military has spearheaded for the past eight years. This was the third year in a row the Leafs have participated.

A quick briefing on Operation HOHOHO:
Team HOHOHO boarded a Toronto Police Unit Hyke Patrol Boat at Toronto Police Marine Headquarters and made way to Toronto Island Airport. Upon arrival at the island, the group rendezvoused with Captain Geoff Mackenzie and other soldiers from the 400 Helicopter Squadron out of CFB Borden who (in lieu of a sled) were flying in three Canadian Military Griffon helicopters.

The group took off from the island and proceeded to land on the roof of Sick Kids Hospital. Upon arrival, our team met up with Canadian Forces Soldiers, members of the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Mayor Rob Ford to distribute stuffed Carlton bears, toques, autographed pictures and other gifts to approximately one hundred kids in attendance. The event was broadcasted live to the three hundred rooms at Sick Kids for the patients who were unable to attend.

This initiative received outstanding media coverage and amplified the deeply rooted relationship between the Toronto Maple Leafs, The Canadian Forces, Toronto Police, and the Hospital for Sick Children.

John-Michael Liles was given a camera to take up in the helicopter ride to Sick Kids hospital. Check out the video!

For the third year in a row – Operation HOHOHO: Mission Accomplished.

"WE Day" Clinic with Dion Phaneuf

This past September, as part of Free the Children's "We Day" programming, Dion Phaneuf decided to drop in on a North York Knights practice at ACC – particularly to visit one very special player.

Mark Mannarn is a 12 year old boy who's done some extraordinary work towards cancer research. Last year, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and sadly he lost his Grandmother to the same disease. Following this, Mark started "Minor Hockey Fights Cancer" a charity that, through grassroots fundraising initiatives around the GTHL, has raised over $200,000 towards Cancer related causes.

Along with Greg Schell, Dion ran a full practice for Mark and his team. He then signed autographs for every player and presented Mark with some autographed merchandise to put towards his fundraising efforts.

Over eight million people tuned in to this year's "We Day" broadcasts to see first-hand how our Captain is a true leader in the community.

Toronto Maple Leafs Annual Visit to Sick Kids Hospital

On November 7, 2011, the Toronto Maple Leafs made their annual visit to SickKids Hospital. This is a long-standing tradition that has taken place since as early as 1927. Players and the coaching staff spent the afternoon visiting and distributing gifts to over 350 kids and their families.

It wasn't only the kids that were impacted as many players were touched deeply by the visit.

The Big Save

This past June in partnership with Canadian Blood Services , MLSE held the 2nd annual Big Save Blood Donor Clinic at Air Canada Centre. MLSE set the record for the largest blood donor clinic in the history of Canadian Blood Services for a single day collection with an astounding 574 units (versus the 477 units the previous record). This effort will assist in saving close to 1,700 lives.

MLSE had a 139 full time employees register to donate which made us the largest collective donor. Five departments had 100% participation: Community Partnerships, Legal, Building Operations, Hockey Operations and Scheduling.

The success of this event demonstrates MLSE's commitment to supporting pertinent, timely social causes and executing first rate events.
