Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke made his first trade as team boss for a player that he was quite familiar with when Brad May returned to his hometown Toronto on January 7, 2009. Burke counted on the intensity and veteran leadership that May brought to Burke's teams both in Vancouver and the Stanley Cup winning team in Anaheim.

During his lone season with the Blue and White in 2008-09, May appeared in 38 games and recorded two points and 61 minutes in penalties. He became the 21st individual to reach the 1,000 career NHL games played milestone while being a member of the Leafs. The milestone came when he faced his original team, the Buffalo Sabres on April 8, 2009.

In 1,041 career NHL games, May recorded 127 goals, 161 assists and 288 points with the Sabres, Canucks, Coyotes, Avalanche, Ducks, Leafs, and Red Wings. The tough left-winger accumulated 2,248 penalty minutes in his 19-year NHL career. He was originally the 14th overall pick in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by Buffalo.

May is a veteran of 88 career NHL playoff games and hockey fans will remember his outstanding individual effort on April 24, 1993 when he beat the Bruins' Andy Moog in overtime of Game 4 as the Sabres swept the division semifinal series.
