EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Mikael Tellqvist took full advantage of his first start in goal in five games for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The backup goalie made 36 saves and Chad Kilger scored the winning goal early in the third period in Toronto's 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.

"He's the real deal," Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn said about Tellqvist.

Matt Stajan and Darcy Tucker also scored for Toronto, and defenseman Bryan McCabe added two assists to push his team-leading points total to 49.

Tucker also praised Tellqvist.

"Phenomenal!" Tucker said. "Great effort and nice to get two points."

The Maple Leafs have won seven of their last eight games and eight of 12 in Edmonton.

"We had a ton of point-blank shots, and a couple of breakaways that were saves," Oilers defenseman Chris Pronger said. "It's tough when you come up against a hot goaltender like that."

Oilers goalie Ty Conklin allowed two goals on six first-period shots. Stajan opened the scoring at 8:33, and Tucker made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 49 seconds left in the period. Tucker has 18 goals this season.

After Edmonton's Shawn Horcoff cut it to 2-1 with 22 seconds left in the second period, Kilger scored off a rebound at 1:59 of the third to restore the two-goal margin. Ryan Smyth added a goal for the Oilers, his 19th of the season, with 5:27 left.

The Oilers have lost four of their last six games.

"We had trouble getting a break at the other end of the ice," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "Just one of those nights."

Notes: As part of Hockey Day in Canada, Wayne Gretzky's father, Walter, dropped the puck in a ceremonial faceoff between Smyth and Tucker with their fathers looking on. ... Ales Hemsky had two assists for the Oilers.
