Maple Leafs-Penguins Preview

GAME: Toronto Maple Leafs (31-15-9-3) at Pittsburgh Penguins (11-38-5-4).

TIME: Monday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

The Pittsburgh Penguins took some positives out of their franchise-record 14th straight loss.

They hope they learned enough to prevent themselves from setting an NHL record for consecutive home losses.

The Penguins will look to put an end to both slides when they meet the Toronto Maple Leafs at Mellon Arena.

Pittsburgh, which became the fifth team in league history to lose 11 straight at home with its 6-3 defeat to Boston on Tuesday, rallied from a two-goal deficit at St. Louis on Saturday, before losing 3-2 in overtime.

Ryan Malone tied the game early in the third period for the Penguins with his fourth goal in three games, and Ted Kotsopoulos also scored in the second period.

The point was the first for Pittsburgh since it earned two in a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on Jan. 12.

"It was very important for us to play well," Penguins forward Brian Holzinger said. "It was a momentum builder, no doubt about it. Now it's up to us to keep this going."

The Penguins have not won at home since defeating Chicago 1-0 on Dec. 29.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 6-4 loss to Buffalo on Saturday.

Toronto built a 3-0 lead before allowing five unanswered goals, including two on the power play.

"We were in complete control of the game until we got into penalty trouble," said goaltender Trevor Kidd, who stopped 27 shots.

Starting goalie Ed Belfour couldn't play for the fifth time in the last seven games because of a tight lower back.

Toronto leads Boston and Ottawa atop the Northeast Division by just one point.
