TORONTO (AP) - Ed Belfour put a bad second period behind him in a hurry.

Belfour made 49 saves and three more in the shootout to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Bruins on Monday night.

``It's just crazy,'' the 40-year-old Belfour said. ``An emotional roller-coaster. One minute you're a slug, the next minute you're a hero.''

Eric Lindros scored the only goal in the shootout.

The fans chanted ``Eddie! Eddie! after Belfour made a series of impressive saves in overtime and the shootout. He struggled in the second period, blowing a 2-0 lead.

``It's a great feeling to know that even when you're not having a great game, when you give up two goals you normally don't, they are still supporting you,'' Belfour said.

Bryan McCabe had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won five of six. The veteran defenseman has 15 points in nine games.

Tie Domi, Alexander Khavanov and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored for the Maple Leafs, with Lindros assisting on Domi's goal.

Brad Boyes, Patrick Leahy, Ian Moran and Glen Murray scored for the Bruins.

``Eddie really played well in the third period. He kind of stole the show,'' said Bruins captain Joe Thornton, who had two assists. ``I think the second period he kind of let a couple floaters in, but he found his confidence in the third.''

Murray gave Boston a 3-2 lead midway through the second with a shot that Belfour couldn't catch, and Boyes made it 4-3 at 3:05 of the third after Belfour left his crease to clear a puck behind his net - illegal under the NHL's new rules. Belfour realized he was about to make a mistake and couldn't clear it. Boyes easily put the puck past him for his second goal.

``I felt bad about the goal that snuck under the glove, and then I had a stupid play where I went out to play the puck,'' Belfour said. ``I got caught in no mans land. You just feel terrible for the guys, and you want to do everything you can to help out.''

After Lindros scored on Toronto's first attempt in the shootout, Thornton beat Belfour with a deke but his shot hit off the post.

``It sure is nice to have a goaltender. Eddie was phenomenal,'' Lindros said. ``He showed mental toughness. He was a rock for us.''

Boston had a two-man advantage late in the third after Toronto's Ken Klee was called for hooking and Alex Steen received a double minor for high-sticking Patrice Bergeron and drawing blood, but the Maple Leafs killed off both.

``It felt like we were up a man for the last 10 minutes of the game, but somehow we got outscored 1-0,'' Boston goalie Andrew Raycroft said. ``It can't happen. I just can't happen.''

After Steen put a shot on net, Ponikarovsky tied it at 4 by batting it out of the air and past Raycroft with 3:37 left in regulation.

Domi opened the scoring at 12:20 of the first after he exchanged passes with Lindros. McCabe made it 2-0 at 13:06 of the second with a backhand shot on the power play for his 10th point on the power play this season.

But Boston scored three straight goals in the second as the Bruins outshot Toronto 24-6 in the period. Leahy scored on a rebound, Moran followed 35 seconds later, and Murray's goal midway through the period made it 3-2.

Khavanov tied it at 3 with 3:48 left in the second with a hard slap shot.

Notes: Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin will not require surgery to repair his injured left eye, the team said. The center's left orbital bone was fractured when he was struck by a puck Oct. 5 in the season opener against Ottawa. Sundin will be re-evaluated early next week. ... Lindros sent Boston's Nick Boynton to the ice with a check in the first.
