TORONTO (AP) - Nobody is better this season on the power-play than Bryan McCabe and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

McCabe scored two goals on the power play, leading the Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night.

The veteran defenseman leads the NHL with 17 points on the power play.

"It's like he's scoring at will right now," Toronto captain Mats Sundin said. "He's the best defenseman in the league right now."

The Maple Leafs went 2-for-4 with the man advantage and moved past Detroit for first overall in the NHL at 25.2 percent, a major reason Toronto (10-7-0) has been able to stay above .500 this season.

"Clearly its won us some games," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said. "The teams that have good special teams are getting the points because all teams are playing a lot shorthanded or on the power play."

McCabe scored on a two-man advantage in the first, and gave Toronto a 2-1 lead at 3:37 of the third.

"They executed two good plays. Their power play is certainly humming and Bryan McCabe is outstanding," New York goalie Kevin Weekes said.

Jaromir Jagr scored his league-leading 18th goal for the Rangers, who dropped to 3-1 on their five game road trip.

Jagr had a hat trick in Saturday's victory over Pittsburgh, his former team.

Eric Lindros played New York for the first time since signing with Toronto over the summer. Lindros didn't record a point, but had a physical game against his former team.

The Maple Leafs won two in a row for the first time since a four-game win streak from Oct. 11-20.

McCabe leads all NHL defenseman with 25 points. He's made himself a strong candidate to play for Team Canada at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

"I'm sick of worrying about that. I spent six years worrying about it, so I'm just playing hockey," McCabe said.

Defenseman Tomas Kaberle assisted on both of McCabe's goals. McCabe's one-timer gave Toronto a 1-0 lead at 18:01 of the first.

Jagr called for the puck by tapping his stick on the ice before tying it at 1 at 6:14 of the second. Michael Nylander made pass from the behind the net to Jagr, who scored from in front of the net.

McCabe's shot from the point went between Weekes' legs early in the third.

But Weekes, a Toronto native, made several impressive stops earlier in the game, finishing with 22 saves.

Ed Belfour also had a strong game with 27 saves.

The Rangers emptied their net and put out an extra skater with 40 seconds, but couldn't tie it.

Notes: Because of the lockout and the Maple Leafs' season sweep of the Rangers in 2003-04, New York hasn't beaten Toronto since Jan. 13, 2003. ... New York's Fedor Fedorov's missed the game with a swollen eye, reportedly the result of being punched at a Tampa Bay club. ... Fedorov's brother, Sergei, was traded from Anaheim to Columbus on Tuesday.
